General Considerations for the Ankle

  • Of all the weight bearing joints in the human body, the ankle is the most commonly injured.
  • All structures that comprise the ankle joint are vulnerable to injury, either in conjunction with one another or in isolation. In the case of ligament damage without fracture, injury often cannot be seen on plain film but is usually demonstrated as soft tissue swelling over the injury.
  • Trauma to the ankle is classified as inversion or eversion injury. However, the forces that cause the injury are rarely inversion or eversion alone.
