Shoulder General Consideration

  • Injury to the shoulder girdle is quite common. Fractures and dislocations can occur together or in isolation and may involve individual or multiple structures.
  • The most common injury to the shoulder is fracture of the clavicle. This injury often occurs in children and adolescents participating in athletic activities.
  • Shoulder dislocation and AC joint separation are most common in middle age individuals, while elderly individuals are most likely to suffer fractures of the proximal humerus.
  • Injuries involving soft tissue and cartilage often require use of MRI or arthrography for diagnosis.
