Functional Abnormalities of the Esophagus

Strictures

Strictures form from the effects of repeated bouts of esophagitis with ulceration and then subsequent fibrosis during the healing phase. This can produce narrowing of the lumen down to a few millimetres in diameter. These strictures typically present as smooth annular narrowings without evidence of shouldering and are usually sited in the distal esophagus.
