Barium Swallow: the thoracic esophagus

Preliminary Information

  • Use "bubbly barium" (medium density, cold, carbonated) for the upright phase and "thin barium" (dilute, low density) for the horizontal phase of the study.

  • Radiographic techniques: 90 kVp photo-timed for double contrast (DC) films and 125 kVp for single contrast (SC) films.
