Drugs

- All peristalsis-inhibiting drugs (e.g., morphine, meperdine [Demerol] should be discontinued, at least on the day of exmination.
- Metoclopramide (Reglan) may be given to facilitate passage of the tube from the stomach and t promote increased peristalsis to improve barium flow through the small intestine. Dose: 2 tablets (10 mg each) p.o. 20 minutes before the exam.
- Diazepam (Valium) may be prescribed by the ordering physician to be taken by anxious outpatients when entering the radiology department, provided they are accompanied by another driver. Dose: 2 tablets (5 mg each) p.o..
- Midazolam (Versed) may be given to anxious inpatients and accompanied outpatients, but the patient must be monitored by independent skilled personnel, as required by the conscious sedation policy of the hospital. Dose: 1 mg I.V. over 1 minute, administered at intervals of no less than 5 minutes, without exceeding a maximum dose of 3 mg.
- All sedated and accompanied outpatients should remain in the radiology department until they are determined by a physician or nurse to be fit to leave.
