Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis - Introduction

Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is the thickening of the muscle of the pylorus resulting in an obstruction. Its incidence is 3 in 1,000 live births, with a male to female ratio of 4-5:1, and an increased incidence with firstborn male children. Signs and symptoms include nonbilious, projectile vomiting and a palpable mass. Treatment usually includes surgery. Associated abnormalities include esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal abnormalities, Turner's Syndrome, trisomy 18, and rubella. |
