    1)  Which of the following entities is not a cyanotic heart disease?

    1. Tricuspid atresia
    2. Tetralogy of Fallot
    3. Atrial Septal Defect
    4. Truncus arteriosus
    5. Transposition of the Great Arteries

Answer: C. Atrial Septal Defect. ASD is an acyanotic heart disease; oxygenated blood from the left atrium goes through a defect in the septal wall to enter the right atrium. The other conditions listed are all cyanotic heart diseases.

    2)  A patient has elevated blood pressure in her upper extremities and a chest radiograph shows rib notching. Which congenital heart disease does this patient likely have?

    1. Atrial septal defect
    2. Ebstein's anomaly
    3. Total anomalous pulmonary venous return
    4. Coarctation of the Aorta
    5. Tetralogy of Fallot

Answer: D. Coarctation of the Aorta. Patients with this condition have increased blood pressure in their upper extremities and decreased blood pressure distal to the coarctation. Enlarged collateral pathways through the intercostal arteries are responsible for the rib notching seen on the chest radiograph.
