Normal resting muscle

 

FDG activity in resting muscle is generally low in intensity. However, active contraction of any skeletal before, during, or immediately after FDG injection can result in relatively increased activity. Increased activity is often seen in the shoulder girdle and upper back in patients who were especially tense at the time of injection or immediately thereafter. If activity in these regions poses a diagnostic dilemma, anxiolytics (e.g. benzodiazepines) can be administered prior to the injection for a future or repeat study. Heavy exercise should be avoided on the day prior to an examination to minimize muscle activity.
