Cartilaginous Space

The Predental space (distance from dens to C1 body) should not measure more than 3 mm in adults and 5mm in children. If the space is increased, a fracture of the Odontoid process or disruption of the transverse ligament is likely. If fracture is suspected, CT should be obtained. If ligamentous disruption is suspected, a MRI should be obtained.
