General Considerations for the Elbow

  • While trauma to the elbow occurs in all age groups, it is most common in children as a result of play and athletic activities.
  • History and clinical exam can aid in diagnosis, but radiologic examination is essential to determine fracture and/or dislocation type, fracture line direction and fragment position.
  • Soft tissue signs are also helpful in assessing intra-articular fractures, especially those involving the radial head.
  • A true lateral view is of utmost importance in diagnosis and should be obtained whenever clinically possible.
