Monteggia Fracture

Monteggia Fracture

  • Fracture of the ulna with accompanying radial head dislocation.
  • May result from a direct blow to the posterior ulna or a fall accompanied with forced pronation of the forearm.
  • Most commonly, physical exam reveals radial head displacement into the antecubital fossa with elbow pain and tenderness.
  • One way to remember the difference between Galeazzi and Monteggia fractures is the mnemonic GRUM: Galeazzi Radius, Ulna Monteggia.
In the image below, note the ulnar fracture and accompanying radial head dislocation.
