Iatrogenic Diseases of Bile Ducts

Despite the best efforts of health professionals, medicine is an inexact science, and procedure related complications may occur. These include:
  • Leakage may occur from cystic duct stump or anastomosis.
  • Stricture may occur from anastomosis or ischemia.
  • ERCP perforation of bowel or biliary ducts.
Radiographic findings:
  • Diagram shows typical appearance of postsurgical stenosis on ERCP.
  • Duodenal perforation on ERCP. Plain radiograph shows mottled gas in central abdomen (arrow). CT confirms extraluminal retroperitoneal gas from iatrogenic bowel perforation during sphincterotomy.
