Portal Venous Hypertension

  1. Pathogenesis:
  • Commonly found in patients with cirrhosis.
  1. Radiographic findings:
  • U/S, CT, MRI: may show ascites, splenomegaly, and portosystemic varices. Most commonly identified varices are the paraumbilical vein, splenorenal, and/or gastrorenal veins.

  • Doppler U/S: may be used to determine if flow is hepatofugal (away from the liver) or hepatopedal (toward the liver).
