Amebic abscess

  1. Pathogenesis:
  • Common in 3rd world.

  • Transmitted by fecal-oral route.

  • The organism, Entamoeba histolytica, first infects the colon, then gains access to the liver via portal venous system.
  1. Radiographic findings:
  • U/S & CT: indistinguishable from bacterial abscess. Tends to be peripheral in location.

  • U/S guided Aspiration: the classic "anchovy paste" appearing material when aspirated.
