Enterocele and Sigmoidocele
  • When a patient has an enterocele, opacified small bowel is observed to descend (herniate) into the pouch of Douglas. If rectal prolapse is also present, the small bowel may invaginate the anterior rectal wall and prolapse along with the rectum through the anal canal.
  • A sigmoidocele can produce a similar herniation if the proximal sigmoid colon descends deep into the pouch of Douglas.
