Policy on Doing Barium Enemas Following
Sigmoidoscopy or Colonoscopy with or without Biopsy

Based on our experience and the relevant
literature, the following is Department of Radiology policy:
- Barium enemas will be performed no
earlier than the next day following proctoscopy or colonoscopy without
biopsy.
- Barium enemas will be done no earlier than 48 hours after rectal or
colonic biopsy through a fiberoptic endoscope.
- Barium enemas will be done no earlier than 6 days after biopsy through
a rigid proctoscope or sigmoidoscope. The only exception will be when the
pathologist evaluating the specimen is able to confirm that the biopsy did
not penetrate the muscularis propria; then a barium enema may be performed
as early as 48 hours after the biopsy.
