Peroral Pneumocolon

This is a useful adjunctive procedure to evaluate the ileocecal region at the conclusion of any antegrade small bowel study: SBFT or enteroclysis.

Indications

  1. When the terminal ileum is poorly visualized

  2. When inflammatory disease of the bowel is strongly suspected clinically but routine compression spot films of the terminal ileum appear normal

  3. When the terminal ileum appears abnormal on routine compression spot films but additional detail is need to make a specific diagnosis

  4. For detailed assessment of an ileocolic anastomosis

  5. To lift matted or compressed loops of ileum out of the pelvis and separate them for better evaluation
