Shock Bowel

Shock bowel represents an ischemic insult to the intestines resulting from decompensated hypovolemic shock.  As a result, the bowel becomes dilated and fluid-filled.  The bowel walls become edematous and thickened, with marked enhancement on CT.  Shock bowel is usually associated with significant ischemic injuries to other vital organs, and it carries a high mortality.
