Necessary Equipment for Cardiac MRI

While MRI technology is now somewhat pervasive in the medical community, not every MRI scanner is adequate to obtain cardiac images. A high performance 1.5 Tesla (a measure of magnetic field strength) magnet with strong, fast gradients is necessary to obtain quality images. It is helpful to use a dedicated cardiac multi-element phased array RF coil as opposed to the body coil (transmit-receive coil built into the bore of most MRI scanners). These specialized coils improve image quality and spatial resolution while allowing for parallel imaging which decreases imaging time. Finally, ECG gating is necessary to reduce motion artifact.
