Normal Knee Anatomy

The following radiographs show the normal anatomy of the knee.

The knee is the largest joint in the body and consists of three articulations: medial tibiofemoral, lateral tibiofemoral and patellofemoral. The medial collateral ligament complex, lateral collateral ligament complex, anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament all provide stability for the knee. Routine radiographic examination of knee trauma includes four projections: AP, lateral and two oblique views. A tunnel projection of the intercondylar notch and/or a sunrise view of the patella may be required depending on the injury.
