Normal Knee Anatomy

The following radiographs show the normal anatomy of the knee.
AP View Lateral View

  • The knee is the largest joint in the body and consists of three articulations: medial tibiofemoral, lateral tibiofemoral and patellofemoral.
  • The medial collateral ligament complex, lateral collateral ligament complex, anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament all provide stability for the knee.
  • Routine radiographic examination of knee trauma includes four projections: AP, lateral and two oblique views. A tunnel projection of the intercondylar notch and/or a sunrise view of the patella may be required depending on the injury.
