Colitis

59 year old female with breast cancer. PET/CT ordered for restaging.

There is markedly increased FDG activity involving a long segment of colon, spanning the distal transverse segment through the rectum, with associated bowel wall thickening. The patient had been treated with antibiotics for chest wall cellulitis and was experiencing diarrhea at the time of the PET/CT scan. Stool examination soon after the PET/CT was positive for Clostridium difficile toxin and the patient was therefore treated for infectious colitis.
